How to choose an MOT test centre

    • Check the class. Most centres test cars (class 4). Motorcycles, large vans and minibuses need a centre that tests that class.
    • Compare prices. The fee in the table is the legal maximum. Many garages charge less.
    • Ask about retests. If the car fails and you leave it for repair, the retest is usually free within 10 working days. See our retest rules guide.
    • Look for the blue sign. Approved centres show the blue sign with three white triangles.
    • Get ready. Simple checks on lights, tyres, wipers and washers avoid the most common fails. See common MOT failures.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I find an MOT test centre near me?

Type your town or postcode into the search box on this page. You will see every DVSA-approved MOT test centre in that area, with its address, phone number and the classes of vehicle it can test.

How do I know a garage is allowed to do MOTs?

Approved MOT test centres display the blue sign with three white triangles. Every centre listed here is on DVSA's official list of active MOT test stations.

How much does an MOT cost?

The maximum fee is £54.85 for a car and £29.65 for a standard motorcycle. Many garages charge less, so it is worth comparing prices when you call to book.

Can any MOT centre test my van?

Vans up to 3,000kg design gross weight take a class 4 MOT, which almost every centre can do. Heavier vans from 3,001kg to 3,500kg need a class 7 test, which fewer centres offer. Check the class before you book.

Are Northern Ireland test centres listed?

No. In Northern Ireland MOTs are carried out by the DVA at its own test centres, which you book through NI Direct. This directory covers England, Scotland and Wales.
