How the MOTstory reminder works
- Enter your registration. We look up the current MOT expiry date from DVSA records.
- Tap Add to calendar. Your phone downloads a calendar event for the expiry date.
- Open it and save it to Apple Calendar, Outlook or your Android calendar. Or use the Google Calendar button.
- You get an alert 30 days before (the right time to book) and another 7 days before.
For a vehicle that has never had an MOT, the reminder uses the first MOT due date. If the MOT has already expired, we tell you to book a test instead.
When should you book your MOT?
In Great Britain, book for any day in the month before your expiry date. Testing up to a month (minus a day) early keeps the same renewal date, and leaves time to fix any faults before the old certificate runs out. In Northern Ireland, book as soon as your reminder letter arrives, because test slots can be booked up weeks ahead and a new certificate runs from the test date.
Reminders for several vehicles
Families and small businesses with more than one vehicle can create a reminder for each registration. Each one downloads as a separate calendar event, so you can add them all to a shared family or business calendar. Fleet operators should also keep a maintenance schedule covering services, tax and inspections.
Why people miss their MOT
- They assumed a reminder would arrive automatically. GOV.UK text and email reminders are opt-in.
- They bought the car recently. Reminders do not transfer to a new keeper.
- It was the car's first MOT, with no previous certificate to remind them.
- They changed phone number or email address.
Missing your MOT can mean a fine of up to £1,000, and you cannot renew your vehicle tax without a valid MOT.
