MOT due date rules
- A car's first MOT is due by the third anniversary of its registration in Great Britain (fourth in Northern Ireland).
- After that it needs an MOT every year.
- You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before the current certificate expires and keep the same renewal date. For example, if it runs out on 15 May, the earliest test that keeps the date is 16 April.
- Driving without a valid MOT can lead to a fine of up to £1,000. You may drive to a pre-booked test or to repairs needed to pass.
